Yandy pulls ‘sexy’ 'Handmaid’s Tale' costume after backlash

Halloween is just around the corner, so look forward to giant, lumpy bags of candy, bright orange Fall-themed decorations and inappropriate get-ups.
Yandy, an American online retailer who claims its corporate ideology is "rooted in female empowerment, and gender empowerment overall", removed the "Brave Red Maiden" from its sexy costume catalog after inciting public outrage.
The outfit is a reference to the critically acclaimed book and Hulu TV series "The Handmaid's Tale" wherein women are denied property, literacy and subjugated to ritualized rape.
After witnessing the outfit's use in recent protests, the inspired retailer thought it would be uplifting to peel back the heavy red cloak, pull up the ankle-length dress, cut out a window for cleavage and complete the look with fishnet tights and a price tag of $64.95.

Capturing what many fans of the hit series felt, Twitter user @YAWednesdays said, "I am honestly surprised it took until the 2nd season of Handmaid's Tale for this to happen. Also, I am going to go away now. Probably forever."
The company took down the outfit nearly a day after its release "given the sincere, heartfelt response, supported by numerous personal stories," according to the organization's site.
For customers who are disappointed about the costume's removal, the online store still offers an abundance of "empowering" outfits like "Sexy School Girl Uniform Costume," "Ruffle School Girl Costume," "Prep School Costume," "Bondage Naughty School Girl Costume" and "Native American Seductress Costume." These garments exist under the store's costume tab or in the separate top category "School Girl Costumes."
