Marco’s Pizza has abruptly closed its Jacksonville location and shifted focus to one of its Springfield sites.
For many, the news came via a note taped to the door at the restaurant next to Family Video at 156 W. Morton Ave.
“We have moved to: 3201 West Iles Ave, Springfield,” the note reads. “We hope to continue serving you there! Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Staff at Family Video confirmed that the Oregon, Ohio-based chain store closed with little warning. A Marcos Pizza in Galesburg closed around the same time and with a similar note taped on its doors, according to news reports, as did a Marco’s Pizza at 2917 S. Sixth St. in Springfield.
All three closings happened suddenly and the company hasn’t indicated why the stores were shut down. A call to the company’s public relations department was not returned Friday.

The chain was one of the fastest-growing pizza franchises in the nation. As recently as Friday, the company announced a growth plan to open 30 more locations within two years.
In 2017, Marco’s Pizza had more than 800 locations and employed around 20,000 employees. Marco’s Pizza was founded in 1978 by Pasquale “Pat” Giammarco, who moved to the United States from Italy when he was 9. According to the company’s website, he worked for his parent’s pizzeria and then opened his own restaurant before expanding across the Midwest.
With the closing of the Jacksonville restaurant, the nearest Marco’s Pizza locations include 3201 W. Iles Ave. in Springfield, 463 E. Chestnut St. in Canton and 897 E. Edwardsville Road in Wood River. Around 20 stores remain open in Illinois, according to the company’s map.
